walk two moons...because of winn dixie..

When I visit a bookstore or even a favorite store like Target, I am always drawn as if by some mysterious gravitational force, to the children's book section. There are so many titles to browse through. I often find myself scrunched on the floor in one of the aisles, removing books one by one....stepping into story after story, adventure after adventure.

There is usually at least one that accompanies me home.

The same thing happens when I visit my public library.. It is a cheerful, inviting refuge filled with limitless opportunities to travel to far away lands and times...and experiences.

Walk Two Moons & Because of Winn Dixie:

Just two of many you will wish to share with others after you read them.

Walk Two Moons

written by Sharon Creech will keep you turning page after page. The story is complex and one that many find a connection to on some level as the story progresses. It is the story of a young girl's journey literally and introspectively across the country. She questions, explores, and vocalizes how she feels ...and it is not a story that only 'girls' find interesting. The author has a unique way of choosing just the word or phrase to bring her characters to life in such a way that they leave a lasting impression on the reader. It is impossible to tell more about this book without spoiling it for the reader. Just find a copy...and you will be hooked.

Because of Winn Dixie by Kate di Camillo is a second book that is 'worth the read.' It is not particularly deep on one level but if one takes time to reflect while reading it, the story will take on new meaning and provide a source of self reflection.

You will laugh and maybe cry and identify as you read it. It is the kind of book you will like to share..to read aloud and talk about...not discuss...but talk about it...have your own Book Club if you wish with your family. A dog, a girl, her father, and other unforgettable characters fall off the pages and into your mind and heart.

Today it is difficult to tear children away from gaming devices and the computer but if you establish a time each evening for reading aloud, it will become a time children anticipate even though they may pretend not to!!!

I have read these books to many classes of sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students and they could not wait until the time of the period when I would read from the book!! We talked about the characters and the story.. and the children connected in one way or another...they questioned things that happened and suggested 'another way the story' could have been told.

Look for other books by Kate di Camillo and Sharion Creech...you will find other stories you will make your own.
