In this recipe you will find a lovely way to make homemade fried onions. .

  • These can be used as a topping for salad and soup.
  • A nicely grilled steak would be happy, happy topped with a few of these as well.

These are not onion rings.

Onion rings generally have a thick batter and are generally a thick cut onion slice.

These are:

  • thin cut onion
  • dipped in milk
  • dusted with seasoned flour.
  • The result is a crisp onion dish that will add a little zip to almost any dish.

It doesn't matter how precisely the onion is cut as long as the person chewing it is happy.

Onions origins go way back to early Egypt

Onions are believed to have been first grown in Pakistan and Iran as long ago as 5000 years ago. It has been difficult to find evidence of them because of the nature of the onion itself---it left little evidence of its existence.

Anthropologists reported that onions were found in Egyptian tombs over three thousand years ago. King Ramses IV reportedly had onions in his eye sockets which is probably because it had a spiritual connection to the lives of those living at that time. There are also paintings of onions on the walls of pyramids.

Vidalia onions---a personal favorite

One of my favorite onions is the Vidalia. When I lived in Georgia, I bought them often. My favorite sandwich at the time was a Vidalia onion sandwich. I still bring home Vidalia's as often as I find them as I just enjoy the texture and flavor of this sweet onion.

Vidalia onions;

  • known as Georgia's state vegetable.
  • first grown over 60 years ago in Toombs County, Georgia. Moses Coleman grew them and much to his surprise they turned out to be sweet rather than hot.
  • Several versions of how the name Vidalia came to be. Some reports are that tourists gave them the name after buy them at the Vidalia Farmer's Market.
  • The water and sugar content in Vidalias is greater than in other onions.

Packed with nutrients and health-promoting phytochemicals

  • High in vitamin C, onions are a good source of
  • dietary fiber
  • folic acid
  • calcium
  • iron
  • low in sodium
  • contain no fat

Gluten free fried onions

I have included this recipe also for those who would like to use a gluten free recipe. I found it on line and the link is no longer active....I had slightly revised it so am sharing....with the disclaimer that it is NOT original with me

Gluten free crisp onions

  • Mix flour and seasonings in a shallow bowl.

  • Dip in skim milk and then scatter in seasoned flour.
  • Shake off excess flour, scatter a handful in hot oil, and cook till crisp.
  • Remove to paper towels to drain excess oil.

Instructions for fried onions

  1. Rinse, peel, and slice onion. Slice into thin rings---very large rings, cut in half.
  2. Mix flour and seasonings together.
  3. Using a wire mesh wooden handled spoon dip onion slices in milk, shake off excess milk, and place in shallow bowl of seasoned flour or you can place in a baggie and shake. The bowl seems to work best as you can use tongs to remove them easily.
  4. Scatter in hot oil using tongs or your hand--be careful of the hot oil.
  5. Allow to cook till golden brown.
  6. Remove to paper towels to drain. Repeat till all onions are cooked.
  7. Instructions for soup
  8. Heat broth to medium high heat. Add thinly sliced onion from green onions.
  9. Add cooled fried onions. Reduce heat and allow to marry for about 10 minutes or longer.
  10. Top with thinly sliced mushroom and green onion.
  11. Serve immediatley.
